The annual Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) doesn’t officially get underway in  Los Angeles until later this morning, but the biggest announcements of the week are already behind us. Both Microsoft and Sony held pre-E3 media events to show off new games and exclusive content yesterday.

Microsoft kicked off their event with a promise: “We are dedicating our entire briefing to games.” Last year, the company faced harsh criticism from gamers who noted the Xbox One launch event focused primarily on television, movies and console accessories.

Without even a mention of the Kinect motion sensor, Microsoft demoed game after game and previewed the next installment in the most successful Xbox franchise: Halo. The company focused heavily on Xbox-exclusive games, including Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon, and Dead Rising 3.

Not to be out done, Sony also demoed new games for the PlayStation 4 last night.

The company showed off a new white version of the PS4, which comes bundled with a matching controller and new sci-fi shooter game Destiny and will be available in September. TNW has the recap of all of Sony’s announcements >>

E3 continues today. Nintendo will hold an online-only conference at 5 p.m. (New York time) this afternoon, and is expected to announce more details about their upcoming game Super Smash Brothers.
